Hello all! Throughout this set I’ll be sharing three tips for upgrading your next at-home photoshoot, because who doesn’t want to make the most of a rainy day in? These photos feature my friend Deniz, who’s an artist and student here in NYC (you can check out her work here or on instagram).
1. Whatever you set out to do, do that – and then do it differently
One of my biggest hinderances is myself. I’ll have a concept for a shoot and when I go to execute it, I feel as if it’s lacking. To combat this I always try wildly different angles, changing up the lighting, having my subject change her hair and/or makeup, etc. It may not result in what you originally set out to do, but it could produce something even better (which definitely was the case in this instance).
2. Try shooting in super-dim lighting while using spotlights
Normally, I’ll make sure my subject and their surroundings are well-lit. For these photos, I did the exact opposite. We turned off all of the lights in her living room and relied on a single lamp that barely focused on her. The result was a vintage Hollywood dreamscape vibe that surprised us both!
3. Don’t be afraid of blur!
If done correctly, blur can result in compelling shots that vaguely resemble movement. Blur can be achieved not just by playing with your focus, but also by playing with your shutter speed. The lower you set it, the more super small movements are exaggerated.
So whenever you have a friend, a camera, and some spare time on your hands – play around and take some photos! If you use any of these tricks, tag me in your photo (@dessiekenna) so I can see your awesome art and send you some instalove. Till next time!
